Surviving The Plagues-Part 2

“‘But on that day I will deal differently with the land of Goshen, where my people live; no swarms of flies will be there, so that you will know that I, the Lord, am in this land.  I will make a distinction between my people and your people. This sign will occur tomorrow.’” Exodus 8:22-23

Our times (and some of our Pastors) have trained us that all good things in life must be attributed to God and all bad things to the devil. In a sense this is true. After all we have such beautiful verses like James 1:17

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

We also have passages in the Bible that specifically pin bad events on our enemy, the Devil.

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8

However this premise is not always true. Sometimes God allows bad things to happen to good people-even to His children as we read in Part 1.
In part 2 we consider a second category of plagues where God is clearly seen to be protecting His people from crises afflicting the general population.
-the plague of flies 8:22-23
-the death of livestock
-hail-storm
-locusts
-darkness
-death of the firstborn

From Exodus 8:22-23 to Exodus 11, we can conclude that God, in certain instances will spare His people the perils of some natural calamities.

However we also teased out the plague of hail-stones and the death of the firstborn and put them in their own category.
This third category was unique in the sense that instructions were given on how to reduce risk of loss.

-to avoid the hailstones both the Israelites and the Jews were warned to shelter their livestock and other property. 9:19
-in the death of the firstborns the Jews were given very specific instructions on what to do the night of the plague Exodus 12:1-28

Again, this we could relate with.
-Are there specific instructions that we have been given concerning C-19? Of course.
-Are there people who ignored the warning concerning the hailstorm? Yes. And they suffered loss.
-Are there people ignoring warnings from public health experts and scientists? Yes. And some have suffered terrible loss.

So we went back to explaining why;

1. We can't play outside with our friends
2. We can't travel to visit Babu and Nyanya( Nairobians please remember 'nyanya' is not a reference to tomatoes)
3. We can't go out to eat pizza in a restaurant
4. No April church camp
5. Can't go to the supermarket
6. Etc etc

By this time my wife was looking more accepting of my words. I concluded that she was finally feeling the weight of my heavy self-proclaimed titles.

We ended by singing this song...

Psalm 49-These Money Things

People, despite their wealth, do not endure;     they are like the beasts that perish. 13  This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,     and of their followers, who approve their sayings. Psalm 49:12-13 Scripture generally takes a pretty low view of the value that man attaches to wealth. It compares those who trust in money to animals that are killed at will. To understand where the Psalmist is coming from, allow me to share a story on how money can play with us. Scar was a simple Christian. He believed that a short prayer and a daily dose of scripture were enough to see him through life’s challenges. He had struggled through life but now things were beginning to look up. He had a nice job that paid him a tidy bonus each year. This he studiously saved because his mind was out there. Like many Kenya’s working-class he had a side-hustle; a fleet management company run by his wife. To his delight it had grown steadily over...

Reverence Part III

I once found myself in the company of our former youth pastor (now senior pastor of a medium-size church in Parklands). He is generally a very simple, humorous and approachable man unlike some of our raucous tele-evangelists. More than once I have visited the church where he pastors just to listen to him.  Having grown up in the rough in a tough Nairobi neighbourhood, his language is often tinged with heavy slang giving his sermons an authenticity that is both hilarious and refreshing. On this particular day I had arrived early for a training at some other venue and as I sat down to wait I spotted the man some distance away. All week, I had felt compelled to remember him in prayer. Now I felt a strong urge to tell him that I had been praying for him. As I approached him a sudden unease gripped me. By the time I was telling him that I had been praying for his safety, I was trembling like a leaf. However, in his usual genial ma...

How I Received My First False Prophecy For 2024-Part I

At the turn of every year, we have a long-standing family tradition of sitting down to flip through T.V. channels. We watch various ministers and performers with different groups of people ushering in the new year in style (with my wife- the children now prefer to be outside blasting those darn fireworks) . However, even after years of midnight sofa-slouching, I still can’t decide who between the ministers and the performers say the most outrageous things. For some reason, the moment seems to turn every charismatic minister worth his salt into some kind of prophet. Pastors, evangelists, apostles, and even the odd comedian feel compelled to utter a 'word' or two for the new year. Often, t hese 'prophetic moments' are highly charged interludes with MOGs & WOGs (Men & Women Of God) giving 'ecstatic utterance' as their listeners rapturously respond with 'Amen!' and ‘I receive!’ This is all good and okay. The problem, however, is that these pr...
