I confess

"I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin." (Psa.38:18)

Simple but powerful. There is no shame in coming to the Lord daily to say;

 "I am sorry for...,"

“I said...which is not appropriate,"

“I let my mind wonder about...,"

“I failed to do that which your Holy Spirit urged me to do when I...."

Many times this kind of confession is preceded by 'trouble' in our hearts. Let’s not make the mistake of shifting that trouble to something else or to someone else. Let’s not call or watsapp or text or FB every time we feel a gentle, nagging pressure on the inside.

Often it is God's Spirit calling us to account. It is not wrong; it is God's way to trouble those He loves and more so those who love Him in turn.

Strange? Yes.

It is like permanently falling in love. It causes us trouble and pleasure in equal measure. Not a condemning kind of trouble but a trouble that desires a quick re-balancing of the relationship. A gentle nudge towards reconciliation.

In the bible the man of God prayed;

"The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise." (Psa.51:17)

He was not wrong. He was not old-fashioned. And no, he was not living under law. He fully understood the grace of God. Maybe more than we do today.

God is holy. His Spirit in you is holy. And yet we are, but earthen vessels. The Holy Spirit in you will not countenance sin in you. He will point it out, He will cause you trouble. Not in a bad way to condemn you but rather to remind you to confess. To reconcile you daily with the Father. The disciple that Jesus loved knew this concept pretty well. He wrote;

8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:8-9)

Do not run away. Do not FB or watsapp or talk your trouble away. Find a place where you can be quiet in your heart and confess.

It will heal you, it will give you peace, and it will give you strength to stand before God and men.

Psalm 49-These Money Things

People, despite their wealth, do not endure;     they are like the beasts that perish. 13  This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,     and of their followers, who approve their sayings. Psalm 49:12-13 Scripture generally takes a pretty low view of the value that man attaches to wealth. It compares those who trust in money to animals that are killed at will. To understand where the Psalmist is coming from, allow me to share a story on how money can play with us. Scar was a simple Christian. He believed that a short prayer and a daily dose of scripture were enough to see him through life’s challenges. He had struggled through life but now things were beginning to look up. He had a nice job that paid him a tidy bonus each year. This he studiously saved because his mind was out there. Like many Kenya’s working-class he had a side-hustle; a fleet management company run by his wife. To his delight it had grown steadily over...

Reverence Part III

  I once found myself in the company of our former youth pastor (now senior pastor of a medium-size church in Parklands). He is generally a very simple, humorous and approachable man unlike some of our raucous tele-evangelists. More than once I have visited the church where he pastors just to listen to him.  Having grown up in the rough in a tough Nairobi neighbourhood, his language is often tinged with heavy slang giving his sermons an authenticity that is both hilarious and refreshing. On this particular day I had arrived early for a training at some other venue and as I sat down to wait I spotted the man some distance away. All week, I had felt compelled to remember him in prayer. Now I felt a strong urge to tell him that I had been praying for him. As I approached him a sudden unease gripped me. By the time I was telling him that I had been praying for his safety, I was trembling like a leaf. However, in his usual genial ma...

How I Received My First False Prophecy For 2024-Part I

At the turn of every year, we have a long-standing family tradition of sitting down to flip through T.V. channels. We watch various ministers and performers with different groups of people ushering in the new year in style (with my wife- the children now prefer to be outside blasting those darn fireworks) . However, even after years of midnight sofa-slouching, I still can’t decide who between the ministers and the performers say the most outrageous things. For some reason, the moment seems to turn every charismatic minister worth his salt into some kind of prophet. Pastors, evangelists, apostles, and even the odd comedian feel compelled to utter a 'word' or two for the new year. Often, t hese 'prophetic moments' are highly charged interludes with MOGs & WOGs (Men & Women Of God) giving 'ecstatic utterance' as their listeners rapturously respond with 'Amen!' and ‘I receive!’ This is all good and okay. The problem, however, is that these pr...
